All over the southern part of Xanthi Prefecture, there are long, beautiful beaches, open to the Thracian sea, which border with the Nestos Delta to the west and with the lagoons of Vistonida lake complex to the east. Beaches and sites that are well-organized and equipped are those in Erasmio, Maggana, Myrodato, Avdera and Mandra; located close to the town, they are easily accessible via the road network. The local beaches are very clean, have shallow waters, sand and picturesque bays, which attract not only tourists but also amateur fishermen. These areas also provide an image of unspoilt natural beauty during the winter, when there are numerous opportunities for birdwatching.
